Xylitol Powder: An Ideal Alternative to Sugar

15 Dec

While sugar is an essential energy for your brain, it is not so good for the other parts of your body. With more people becoming aware of the harmful effects sugar has on the human body, the interest towards alternatives to sugars has increased a lot.

The problem with that is, among the many sugar alternatives available in the market, are the artificial sweeteners. These contain harmful additives that can be even worse to your health and wellbeing. So, how do you know which path to take? Xylitol powder is a great way to follow.

Xylitol powder is a natural sugar substitute extract from nature and free of controversial ingredients such as aspartame. It looks and tastes like sugar, but has 40% less calories than regular sugar. Moreover, it doesn’t raise blood sugar levels, which makes it a great option for diabetics.

The name xylitol may sound strange for you, but it is a very common ingredient in sugar free chewing gums, candies and diabetes friendly foods. Take note that although xylitol is often compared to sorbitol (another sugar alternative that is found in many diet products), if you are diabetic, you should avoid sorbitol or at least consume it in reduced amounts. In addition, sorbitol is known to feed dental plaque and encourage gum disease, which can lead the blood glucose to become unstable. Xylitol, on the other hand, help you to stabilize the blood glucose while keeping your mouth healthy.

According to studies, xylitol is beneficial for dental health and can even help prevent tooth decay. But that is not all. There are many health benefits related to it. The addition of Xylitol to saline nasal sprays, positive pressure bottles, and neti pots has been shown to make these products much more effective at helping to prevent sinus infection in adults, prevent ear infection in children, and allergies and asthma in people of all ages.

You can use xylitol powder to sweeten your coffee, tea, juice, etc., as well as use it to substitute sugar in your dessert recipes. Once you get to try preparing your favorite cake with this product, you will be amazed how there is no ‘sweetener’ aftertaste commonly experienced with other sugar alternatives.

Although using xylitol usually doesn’t present any side-effect, some individuals do present digestive discomforts including, bloating, gas and diarrhea when they consume the product in large doses. However, the majority of people who try xylitol seems to adjust to it very well. Keep in mind that the daily recommended dosage of xylitol powder is no more than 400 grams. This will avoid negative side effects.
